Malitsa (Nenets Reindeer-Fur Coat)
Men's winter coat of the Nenets reindeer herders, sewn from reindeer skins with the fur turned inward, a hood attached inside, and worn with a belt (sok) and fur mittens. Decorated with white or red fur tufting and fur mosaic, the malitsa is made from autumn- and winter-killed reindeer and is the herders' everyday Arctic dress. Because the fur faces inward, the garment traps warm air against the body while the smooth outer hide sheds wind and snow, and the sewn-in hood protects the head without an added collar.
