Robe of Nessus
The robe or tunic smeared with the centaur Nessus' blood that Deianeira gave Heracles, believing it a love charm; the poisoned blood burned Heracles so terribly that he begged to be burned on a pyre. Sophocles' Women of Trachis makes the robe the instrument of the hero's death, and the story became a byword for a gift that destroys its giver. The centaur's dying trick, meant to avenge himself on Heracles, turns a wife's love into a fatal weapon. The robe is among the most famous poisoned objects in Greek tragedy.
