The opanak is the traditional leather shoe of the Serbian countryside, a soft moccasin cut from a single piece of cured pig or calf hide, stitched at the heel and gathered over the foot with thongs that cross above the ankle. Its most striking feature is the turned-up toe, the špic, which lifted the foot clear of dew, grass and stones and, in the most famous regional pattern, curls back into a small horn over the instep.
