Oseberg Ship
The richly carved oak vessel of a Viking-age ship burial uncovered at the Oseberg farm near Tønsberg, Norway, in 1904. About 21.8 meters long, the ship carried two women and rich grave goods, including the carved Oseberg wagon and sledges. Its animal-head prow and decorated frames show the craft of early 9th-century Norse shipbuilding, and it is exhibited in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. The ship was built of oak felled in the early 800s and was rowed and sailed on the coast before it was drawn ashore and buried under a great mound, where it lay until the excavation.
