Palau Storyboard
Carved wooden panel of Palau recording the myths, histories and village legends of the islands in low-relief figures. The form descends from the painted facade boards of the bai, the great men's meeting house, whose gables carried scenes of the ancestors and of village life, and from the 1930s carvers began to translate those painted narratives into portable low-relief wood. Storyboards show culture heroes, voyages, sea creatures and village quarrels, and they are carved as commemorative gifts, as teaching pieces for the young, and for the market, keeping the island's oral tradition alive in c
