Trident of Poseidon
The three-pronged trident of Poseidon, forged by the Cyclopes, that shakes the earth, splits cliffs, and raises or calms storms; with it he struck the rock of the Acropolis to produce a salt spring in his contest with Athena. It is the standard emblem of sea power and earthquakes in Greek myth, carried by the god in art from the archaic age onward. In later retellings the trident is the very tool by which horses and springs are drawn from the ground. Its three points became the sign of the sea in Mediterranean culture.
