Rooster of Barcelos
The Rooster of Barcelos comes from the Portuguese legend of a Galician pilgrim who, condemned to hang for a theft he did not commit, stood before the judge's table and swore his innocence by a roasted rooster, declaring that the bird would crow if he were innocent. As the noose was being fitted, the roast cock rose on the table and crowed; the pilgrim was freed, and he returned to Barcelos to raise a monument in thanks. The story, told in many collected versions in northern Portugal, is usually set at Barcelos on the pilgrim road to Santiago de Compostela, and some versions place it at the nei
