Rostam's Spear
The heavy war-spear (nezeh) of the hero Rostam in the Shahnameh, carried alongside his bull-headed mace and his lasso (kamand) through the Haft Khan, the seven trials, and the wars against Turan, and used to strike down champions in single combat. In Ferdowsi's epic it is one of the enormous plain weapons that suit Rostam's strength, and it is with such arms that he takes the field in the duels against the Turanian heroes and in the fateful, unrecognised fight with his own son Sohrab. The epic seldom dwells on the spear's forging, so its particulars follow the conventions of Persian heroic poe
