Scarab Amulet
The scarab amulet is the Egyptian image of the dung beetle, carved in glazed faience, stone, or hard materials and worn or placed on the body from the Old Kingdom onward, as the emblem of the god Khepri, who rolls the sun across the sky as the beetle rolls its ball of dung. The beetle's habit of appearing from the ground was read as self-creation, so the scarab became the sign of creation and of rebirth, and from the Middle Kingdom the heart scarab, inscribed with chapter 30 of the Book of the Dead, was laid over the mummy's heart to keep it from testifying against the deceased at the judgemen
