Sieidi Stone
A natural stone, boulder, or outcrop venerated by the Sámi as the dwelling of a spirit and a place of offering, the sieidi or seita. Hunters, fishers, and herders left antlers, bones, silver, or food at sieidis to secure luck and damaged the stone when crossed. Many stand at lakes, rivers, and passes across Norwegian Sápmi, and the custom survived in the far north into modern times. Each sieidi was home to a spirit of its own, and the people who used it knew which offering suited the place, whether a reindeer's antlers for the herd or a silver coin for the fishing luck.
