Supay Figurine
Supay is the lord of the uku pacha, the world beneath the earth in Quechua cosmology, a realm of the dead and of the roots of the mountains; his images and masks, carved in stone or modeled in clay, stand for his power over that hidden country. In the colonial era his name was pressed into service as the Quechua word for the Christian devil, and the figure was forever blurred in two, ancient lord of the underworld on one side, Christian demon on the other.
