Svalinn
Svalinn, 'the chill' or 'the cooling one', is the shield that stands before the sun in Norse mythology, named in the poem Grímnismál. According to the stanza, the shield protects the earth from the burning rays of the sun goddess Sól as she is dragged across the sky by the horses Árvakr and Alsviðr, and 'mountains and sea would be set in flames' if it ever fell from its place. The shield is also named in Sigrdrífumál and in Snorri's list of shield-names in Skáldskaparmál, and scholars have suggested it preserves a Bronze Age image of the sun as a round, shield-like disc.
