Tarnhelm, the magic cap of invisibility in the Middle High German Nibelungenlied, is taken by the hero Siegfried from the dwarf Alberich after he overpowers the dwarf and seizes the Nibelung hoard. Whoever wore the cap, the Tarnkappe, became invisible and could perform feats of strength as though unseen, and Siegfried uses it in the poem to fight in disguise.
