The thangka is the painted or embroidered scroll image of Tibetan Buddhism, hung in monasteries, homes and shrines across the Himalayan world and framed in a silk brocade border. The painter first lays out a precise iconometric grid on cotton or silk, then works with mineral pigments and gold in the traditional palettes of the Newar and monastic painters, finishing with an outline in black and the consecration of the image.
