The Church Keys
The church key used in the Swedish divination called nyckelprövning, the key test. A key was bound between the pages of a Bible, which was then hung or turned while names were read, and it was believed the key would point out or shake at the name of a thief. The key-and-Bible test is documented in Swedish folk tradition for finding stolen goods, and it was trusted because the church key and the holy book brought God's judgement into the search.
