The Jelling Stones
The two great runestones of the royal monument at Jelling, Jutland, raised by kings Gorm and Harald Bluetooth in the 10th century. The smaller stone was raised by Gorm in memory of his queen Thyra, and the larger, carved with a figure of Christ and a great beast, was raised by Harald in memory of his parents. Harald's runes announce that he won all Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian, marking Denmark's conversion in the royal monument's own words. The stones stand in the churchyard of Jelling, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
