The Lur
A long S-shaped horn of hammered bronze from the Nordic Bronze Age, cast with an ornamental disc at the mouth and decorated in fine raised bosses and engraving. More than fifty lurs survive, most from Denmark, found in peat bogs and hoards, including the famous Brudevaelte lurs from Zealand. Their curved form and fine workmanship make them among the oldest surviving brass instruments in the world, and they were likely sounded in cult and sacrifice, perhaps in pairs, as Bronze Age rock carvings suggest.
