Nydam Boat
A clinker-built oak rowing boat, about 23 meters long, dug from the Nydam bog in southern Jutland in 1863 together with swords, spears, and shields offered after a battle. Built around 320 CE for a war fleet, it shows mature northern plank construction a thousand years before the Viking ships, with iron rivets and overlapping strakes. The boat was sacrificed in the bog together with weapons, a practice documented across the great bog finds of the region. It is the oldest clinker-built boat preserved in Scandinavia and is displayed at Gottorf Castle in Schleswig.
