Urðarbrunnr
Urðarbrunnr, the well of fate that lies beneath a root of the world tree Yggdrasil, beside which the three Norns dwell and shape the fates of men. The gods hold their council there, and swans swim in the well. Each day the Norns water the tree with its clay-white water and dew so that it never withers, making the well the source of all destiny in Norse myth. The well takes its name from Urðr, the eldest Norn, whose sisters Verðandi and Skuld spin and cut the threads of every life.
