Sword of Theseus
The sword of the Athenian hero Theseus, left with a pair of sandals beneath a great rock at Troezen by his father Aegeus. When Theseus grew strong enough to lift the rock, the tokens proved his royal birth, and he carried the sword to Athens, where his father recognized him by it on the eve of his first trials in the city. Plutarch and Pausanias record the tokens of Troezen. He chose the harder road to Athens by land and cleared it of bandits with the very sword, so that he entered the city already a hero.
