Three Sisters Garden
The Three Sisters garden is the Haudenosaunee method of planting corn, beans and squash together in a single mound, each crop supporting the others: the corn stalk gives the beans a pole to climb, the beans fix nitrogen in the soil for the corn, and the squash spreads its broad leaves to shade the roots and hold moisture. The three crops are called the sisters, or Deohako in Iroquoian tradition, inseparable companions given to the people by the Creator, and they are honoured in ceremonies through the growing season, especially at the Green Corn Festival.
