Troiță
Troița is the wayside cross of Romania, a hand-carved wooden cross sheltered under a little roof, erected at crossroads, springs, bridges and village edges to protect travellers and to honour the dead. In the wood-carving country of Maramureș the crosses are true monuments, their beams covered with vine scrolls, geometric rosettes, suns and sometimes the image of the Crucified, with inscriptions naming the dead and the year, and the oldest surviving examples go back to the eighteenth century.
