The Whistling Arrow
The whistling arrow is the signal arrow of the Mongol armies, tipped with a drilled bone or wooden head that shrieked in flight, and it was used by Genghis Khan's cavalry to direct charges, ambushes, and encirclements across the steppe. Described by Persian chroniclers such as Juvaini and by Chinese observers, the arrow worked by sound rather than by wounding: the drilled head, often globular with holes, screamed as it flew, and the direction and number of whistles could carry simple commands to units spread across the plain. The technology descended from the signal arrows of the earlier stepp
