Zanzibar Dhow
The dhow (jahazi) of Zanzibar is a lateen-sailed wooden vessel built on the Swahili coast for fishing, cargo, and the trade that rode the monsoons across the Indian Ocean. Hulls were traditionally sewn with coconut-coir fibre and caulked, and the ships carried ivory, cloves, mangrove poles, and grain between East Africa, Arabia, and India. The pattern of the monsoons set the rhythm of the whole coast: dhows sailed out on the kusi winds and returned with the kaskazi, and captains timed their passages by the stars.
