A Plantation Witch
Collected by Joel Chandler Harris in the Uncle Remus stories, 'A Plantation Witch' tells of supernatural occurrences on the plantation. Uncle Remus recounts that witches on the plantation could transform into animals, particularly haunts and hags that rode people at night. According to the tale, a young enslaved man named 'Toby' was ridden by a hag every night and would wake up exhausted. An old conjure woman told him to sprinkle salt and pepper around his bed before sleeping. When the hag came that night, she could not approach him. In a rage, she revealed herself as a woman from the neighbor
