Anansi once invited Turtle to dinner, but when Turtle arrived after a long journey, Anansi told him that custom required Turtle to wash his hands before eating. As Turtle walked to the river and back, Anansi ate all the food. Turtle, realizing he had been tricked, invited Anansi to dinner at the bottom of the river. Anansi jumped into the water but floated to the surface, unable to sink. Turtle told Anansi to fill his pockets with stones to weigh himself down.
