Atabey, Mother of Waters and Creation
Atabey (also Atabex) is the supreme mother goddess of the Taino people, the indigenous inhabitants of the Greater Antilles. She is the goddess of fresh water, fertility, the earth, and the moon. According to Taino creation myth, Atabey gave birth to herself from all the elements before creating the world. She then produced twin sons: Yocahú (also called Yucaju), the god of cassava and the sea, and Guacar, who became Juracán, the god of storms and chaos.
