Chata and Chicksah: The Separation of the Choctaw and Chickasaw (Choctaw/Chickasaw)
Two brothers named Chata and Chicksah led their people from the west, following a sacred pole. Each night they planted the pole in the ground, and each morning they traveled in the direction it leaned. After an immensely long journey, they finally reached a place where the pole stood perfectly upright. There, they laid to rest the bones of their ancestors, which they had carried in buffalo-hide sacks from the original land in the west. The great earthwork mound of Nanih Waiya grew from that burial. Afterward, the land could not support all the people. Chicksah took half the people and departed
