The Chickasaw flood myth tells of a time when the earth was covered by a great deluge. As the waters rose, the people climbed to the highest ground, but the water continued to rise. Ababinili, the Creator, instructed a man and a woman to build a raft and take on board pairs of all the animals. The flood covered even the tallest mountains for many days. When the waters finally receded, the man and woman found themselves at Nanih Waiya, the sacred mound. From them, the Chickasaw people were reborn.
