Chura-Batyr is the heroic epic of the Tatar people, set in the mid-16th century during the Kazan Khanate's struggle against the expanding Moscow state. Chura is a batyr (hero) who defends Kazan against Russian invasion. The epic contains ancient motifs including Chura's miraculous birth to elderly parents after years of childlessness, his heroic childhood, his journey to Kazan with the blessing of a holy elder, and his service to the khan.
