Coyote and Eagle Steal the Sun and Moon
A Zuni story explaining the origin of day and night and the changing seasons. In the beginning, the Sun and Moon were kept locked in boxes by a powerful being who would not release them. The world was in perpetual twilight. Coyote and Eagle, two of the most clever animals, devised a plan. Eagle flew to the being's home with Coyote hidden in his feathers. While the being slept, Coyote crept out, opened the boxes, and Eagle seized the Sun and Moon with his talons. They fled, pursued by the angry being. Eagle rose higher and higher into the sky, placing the Sun and Moon in their proper positions.
