Dakuwaqa is a fearsome shark deity in Fijian mythology who appears as a fierce sea monster guarding the islands. He was greatly respected by fishermen for protecting them from danger at sea. In one creation myth, Dakuwaqa attempted to conquer Kadavu Island by swimming up a river, but the goddess Rokobakaniceva challenged him in the form of a great octopus. After a titanic battle, the octopus pulled out Dakuwaqa's teeth with her eight arms, forcing the shark god to promise never to attack Kadavu again.
