Degei the Serpent God and the Creation of Fiji
Degei, the supreme god of Fijian mythology, is a great serpent who created the world, fruits, and the first humans. He hatched an egg from which the first human couple emerged. Degei lives in a cave near the summit of Mount Uluda in the Nakauvandra Range. Earthquakes and thunder are caused by his uneasy turnings within the cave. He judges newly dead souls who pass through one of two caves, Cibaciba or Drakulu, sending a few to paradise (Burotu) and casting most into a lake to sink to Murimuria for reward or punishment. He is also a god of wrath who punishes by destroying crops or sending flood
