In Basotho mythology, the monstrous Khanyapa (also called Kholumolumo or Kgodumodumo) went about swallowing every living thing in its path, devouring entire villages until only one pregnant woman survived by hiding in a stable, her scent masked by ashes. She prayed to Modimo and gave birth to a son named Ditaolane, who emerged from the womb wearing a necklace of divination bones and instantly grew into a fully grown man.
