Duppy: The Restless Spirits of Jamaica

Duppies are restless spirits in Jamaican folklore, believed to be the souls of the dead who have not found peace. Good duppies appear in dreams (called 'dream you') to give advice or information from deceased family and friends. Bad duppies can cause harm and may be set on someone through obeah (sorcery). Duppies are said to speak in high-pitched nasal voices. Signs of a duppy's presence include a feeling that one's head is growing or unexplained heat. Protection methods include eating salt (which duppies despise), wearing clothes inside out, cursing, or exposing oneself to shame the spirit. S
