Food for Kings: Oatcake and Herring
When King Charles XI confiscated most noble properties in the Great Reduction of 1680, his aunt Countess Maria Eufrosyna of Höjentorp was affected. When the king came to visit, she greeted him with a box on the ear, then served him nothing but a herring's tail and an oatcake. When the king offered to return her property, she cut him off and gave him a second box on the ear. The king hastily commanded that she keep her property.
