Hi'iaka's Journey to Bring Lohiau to Pele

Pele fell in love with Lohiau, a chief of Kauai, during a spirit dream. She sent her beloved youngest sister Hi'iaka to retrieve him. Hi'iaka agreed on the condition that Pele protect her sacred lehua groves and friend Hopoe. On Kauai, Hi'iaka found Lohiau had died of heartbreak and spent thirty days chanting to revive him. On the journey back, Pele grew jealous of Hi'iaka's prolonged absence. In rage, Pele destroyed Hi'iaka's lehua groves and encased Hopoe in lava.
