How Gluskabe Stole Tobacco
In the early days, tobacco was guarded jealously by Grasshopper (or a giant), who kept it hidden from humanity. The people prayed for tobacco to use in their ceremonies, as it was the sacred plant that carried their prayers to the Creator. Gluskabe heard their pleas and devised a plan. He transformed himself into a small, harmless creature — sometimes a rabbit, sometimes a mouse — and snuck into Grasshopper's lodge while he was away. He found the tobacco bundled in a pouch and escaped with it. Grasshopper pursued but Gluskabe was too swift. He distributed the tobacco among the Wabanaki tribes,
