How the Buffalo Were Released on Earth
Long ago, all the buffalo were kept hidden in a cave deep beneath the earth by a powerful spirit who did not want to share them with humans. A young Comanche warrior, guided by a wolf spirit, discovered the cave entrance. Following the wolf's advice, he transformed into a buffalo calf and entered the herd. When the keeper opened the cave door to let the buffalo graze, the warrior-turned-calf stampeded the herd out of the cave. The buffalo poured across the plains, and the Comanche people had food and clothing. The wolf spirit taught the people how to hunt the buffalo with respect.
