Iktomi and the Boulder
Iktomi the spider trickster wrapped himself in a fine robe and went walking. He came upon a large boulder and, feeling generous, offered it his robe. The boulder declined, but Iktomi insisted and placed the robe upon it. Later, when Iktomi wanted his robe back, the boulder refused. Iktomi grew angry and insulted the boulder, which chased him and crushed him flat. Bats came to help Iktomi, pecking at the boulder until it cracked open, freeing him. But the bats' faces were smashed flat in the effort, and Iktomi—ever ungrateful—scattered pebbles that became the stones covering the plains.
