Kawa the Blacksmith and Newroz
The foundational Kurdish myth explaining the origins of Newroz (the Kurdish New Year on the spring equinox). The evil Assyrian king Zahhak (Zuhak) had serpents growing from his shoulders that demanded daily sacrifices of young men's brains. Kawa, a blacksmith who lost all but one of his sons to the sacrifice, rallied the people in revolt. He led them to the mountains, forged weapons, and stormed Zahhak's palace, killing him with his blacksmith's hammer.
