A childless queen receives advice from an old woman: bathe in running water and eat two red onions. In her excitement, she eats one onion with the skin on, and peels the other. As a result, she gives birth first to a hideous lindorm (serpent), who is secretly thrown into the forest, and then to a beautiful prince. Years later, when the prince sets out to find a bride, the lindorm blocks the road and demands that a mate be found for him first.
