Komokwa the Undersea Chief (Kwakwaka'wakw)
Komokwa (also known as Qomoqua or Copper-Maker) is the powerful chief of the undersea world in Kwakwaka'wakw mythology. He lives in a magnificent copper house beneath the ocean, where he controls all the wealth of the sea, including seals, sea lions, salmon, and the precious copper that gives him his name. Komokwa appears as a figure with a large, bulbous head covered in feathers or hair, often depicted with a wide mouth and protruding tongue. He sometimes takes the form of a sea monster or appears riding a Sisiutl canoe. Humans who visit his underwater kingdom must undergo dangerous trials. I
