Lakota Star Husband Story

romance · United States · North American

Two Lakota girls lay outside their tipi one night, and one pointed at the brightest star saying she wished to marry it. The next day the girls found themselves in the sky world, where the first girl became the wife of a star. She was told not to dig around a certain turnip-like root, but curiosity overcame her. When she pulled the root, she saw the Earth far below through the hole. Homesick, she and her husband wove a rope to descend, but it was too short and she fell. She survived and returned to her people, but the star husband remained in the sky and can be seen as the evening star.
