Language on a Mountain
After a great flood swept through the land, Na'pi (Old Man) gathered all the people on top of a large mountain. He gave them water of different colors—black, red, yellow, and white—and told them to drink and then speak. Each group that drank the colored water spoke a different language. Only those who received the black water spoke the same language; these were the bands of the Blackfoot Confederacy: the Piegan, Siksika, and Blood (Kainai) people. This event was said to have taken place on the highest mountain in the Montana reservation.
