Leuk the Hare and the Chief's Daughter (Wolof)

myth · Senegal · African

A powerful chief announced that whoever could make him laugh would win his daughter's hand in marriage. Many tried and failed. Leuk the Hare presented himself and performed a series of absurd tricks, piling animals on top of each other in increasingly ridiculous ways. The chief finally burst out laughing, but then said Leuk must also complete three impossible tasks: find a talking cow, bring water in a sieve, and catch the wind. Leuk used his cleverness to succeed in all three tasks. He found a cow that 'talked' by having it moo at the right moment. He lined the sieve with clay to carry water.
