Maui Slowing the Sun
Maui observed that the sun, Tamanuitera, moved across the sky too quickly, leaving insufficient daylight for working, cooking, and fishing. He convinced his brothers to help capture the sun and force it to slow down. They traveled east to the pit where the sun rose, built a wall of clay to hide behind, and wove strong ropes from flax. When the sun rose, Maui chanted a karakia and the brothers threw ropes around the sun's body, trapping it. Maui struck the sun with his magic jawbone until it agreed to travel more slowly across the sky, giving humanity longer days for their labors.
