Mooin, the Bear's Child
A young Mi'kmaq boy wandered into the forest and became lost. A great she-bear found him and, instead of harming him, adopted him as her own cub. The boy grew up among the bear people, learning their ways and understanding the language of animals. He became strong and brave, but he always remembered that he was human. When he was grown, the bear people told him it was time to return to his own kind. Before he left, the bears taught him the songs and ceremonies they used to honor the Great Spirit, and gave him permission to hunt them for food — but only if he always showed respect and gratitude
