Moremi Ajasoro was a legendary queen of Ile-Ife who sacrificed her own happiness to save her people from repeated raids by the neighboring Ugbo people. The Ife warriors were unable to defend against the Ugbo, who were disguised as forest spirits. Moremi allowed herself to be captured and taken to Ugbo as a slave. There, she learned the secrets of their battle tactics and eventually escaped back to Ife. She revealed to the Ife warriors that the Ugbo were not spirits but men who could be defeated.
