Nafanua: The Warrior Goddess
Nafanua, daughter of Saveasi'uleo (god of Pulotu) and Tilafaiga, was born a female but hidden in the forest by her mother out of shame. She emerged as a fierce warrior when Samoa was oppressed by tyrannical rulers. Disguising her chest so enemies would not know she was a woman, Nafanua led rebellions that freed the people of Savai'i from bondage. She was relentless and merciful only in victory, bringing peace after winning the wars between the eastern and western districts. Nafanua established the matai (chiefly) system and is revered as Samoa's greatest war goddess. After her earthly exploits
